In May 2026, a train derailment in Juliette created an unusual propane-related safety challenge. One of the train cars came to rest on top of a 500-gallon propane tank that still contained fuel, and the tank’s valve had been sheared off.
Norfolk Southern and Monroe County requested support from Donny’s Propane Gas so the tank could be handled safely and cleanup work could continue. Our team responded and worked alongside Monroe County Emergency Services and Norfolk Southern’s hazmat personnel.
A careful response to an unusual situation
A damaged propane container demands deliberate work. Before the area could be restored, the remaining liquid propane had to be removed and the tank had to be evacuated from beneath the rail car. Donny’s team helped complete that work so the other responders could move ahead with their responsibilities.
The incident also showed how much physical punishment a properly manufactured propane tank can withstand. That durability did not make the situation routine, however. A sheared valve and remaining fuel required trained responders, coordinated communication, and controlled handling.
Working together for a safe outcome
Emergency scenes are team efforts. Monroe County personnel managed the local response, Norfolk Southern brought its railroad and hazardous-material expertise, and Donny’s contributed specialized propane knowledge. Each group had a distinct role, and the shared priority was to manage the hazard without creating additional risk.
Donny McKinney personally recognized the work of everyone involved and emphasized the outcome that mattered most: the tank was safely removed, the liquid propane was evacuated, and the responders were able to go home safely to their families.
